Global Wind Report 2022 the state of the art of the Wind Industry

The Global Wind Energy Council – a member-based organization that represents the entire wind energy sector – has released the Global Wind Report 2022, showing the trend of the wind industry in 2021. Some points have been highlighted: the wind industry has enjoyed its second-best year ever, with growth in 2021 only 1.8% behind a record 2020. Almost 94 GW of capacity was added, bringing global cumulative wind power capacity to 837 GW, showing year-over-year (YoY) growth of 12%. Europe has played a major part in this growth, where new onshore installations increased by 19%.
Wind industry has confirmed his key role as a custodian of the energy transition, presenting itself as the best technology that can guarantee the respect of international climate targets and, now more than ever, the reduction of dependency from fossil fuels as gas and oil. Energy security issue has reinforced the need to boost new wind power installation worldwide, especially in Europe, where the report underlines the difficulties in permitting and regulation-associated area, real barrier to wind growth, as well as the urgent need to invest in grid connections and electricity networks.
Wind power is therefore poised to play a vital role in accelerating the global energy transition: with our new business strategy our commitment is to contribute to design a more sustainable society, and to share long-term sustainable value to all our stakeholder, governments, institutions, local communities. Hence, ERG intends to continue the growth of its renewable’s portfolio in the period 2022-2026 by increasing the installed capacity up to 4.6 GW, of which 3.8 GW in wind assets, with a strong focus on innovation: in this regard, the Group is looking carefully at repowering projects, that will allow us to rejuvenate our Assets, leveraging on superior wind locations and fore-front technologies energy storage, floating wind power, green hydrogen and the circular economy, where it is also engaged in an ESG perspective, to seek innovative opportunities for the large-scale recycling of disused wind turbine blades.
